Dealing with the ups and downs of private practice

As much as therapists might dislike the B word, private practice is a business. And every business goes through ups and downs. Unfortunately, we often end up on a rollercoaster of emotions along with it. We might feel great about ourselves and our skills when our roster is full. When there are cancellations or open slots, it can make us question our skills or consider alternative careers.
These fluctuations can be quite draining.
So what can we do?
Differentiate yourself from the business. You and the business likely have different personalities. The business responds to several external forces. It is very common for it to be slower during festive months, summer, year end and pick up pace at the beginning of the year or post appraisals in April.
If you were to separate yourself from the business for a moment, just think- what are your energy levels like during these times of the year?
Until next time,
