Managing the multiple roles of private practice

I had asked therapists on IG about the most stressful parts of being a private practitioner. A common woe emerged- the multiple tasks.

So what can we do about these? Some thoughts-

  • Have a clearly defined schedule. What are your working hours? Working days? When is your weekly off? Resist temptations to make exceptions to your schedule as much as possible. Working during your weekly offs can lead to exhaustion over a period of time.

    Example of a defined schedule:

    I am available from Tuesday-Saturday between 12pm-8pm.

  • Set dedicated time for the different tasks of practice. Make a list of all the tasks you need to do during a week/month beyond therapy work. Make a schedule for these and block that time on Calendar. A clearly defined schedule with time blocked out for all practice related tasks can allow you to feel less anxious about finding the time needed to see clients and complete administrative tasks.

    An example of this:

    Monday 10am-2pm: Reading time

    Wednesday 10am-12pm: Session Notes

    Tuesday 8pm - 9pm: Networking with Professionals
Last day of every month, 10am-11am: Tracking Payments for the month

Until next week,

Suvrita

P.S. Have more ideas on how to manage the many tasks of running the business? I’d love to hear!
