As the calendar approaches the end of the year, it’s a great time to take stock of what you’ve accomplished and set intentions for the year ahead. And no, this isn’t quite the same as setting New Year’s resolutions.
I first came across this practice in 2021 through a fellow therapist, and have found it to be very useful for tracking professional growth and outlining goals. I recommend making it an annual ritual for reflecting on your achievements, identifying growth areas, and setting clear, actionable targets for the future.
A format I’d suggest is to break down the reflection into business and therapy side of practice. There is no right way to do it, but here are some ideas to get you started-
Therapy Side
Skill Development: Reflect on the skills you’ve developed or strengthened over the past year.
Client Breakthroughs: Consider the breakthroughs and successes you’ve had with clients.
Stuck Points: Identify areas where you feel challenged or “stuck” and may want to prioritize supervision or peer consultation.
Professional Growth: List specific skills or courses you’d like to focus on in the coming year.
Business Side
Administrative Tasks: Evaluate how you’re handling administrative work. Are there changes you could make to streamline or delegate to free up more time?
Financial Review: Review your accounts, income, and expenses to identify any areas for improvement.
Goals for Visibility: Set targets around networking, creating or updating your website, refining your resume, or anything else that supports your growth and professional presence.
Until next week,
