⚖️ Are sliding scales only about accessibility?

When clients ask for sliding scale, at times it comes from a place of genuine need. Other times the ask for one is reflective of a deeper pattern that needs to be understood, explored and at times, gently corrected. In that sense, it is not purely a business request or consideration. But a therapeutic concern as well.

Despite the systemic pitfalls, the therapist community has been quite actively contributing to increasing access to therapy by keeping sliding scale slots. A few things to reflect about when working with these-

  • Why am I keeping these? Does it meet any of my needs as well?

  • Will I respond differently to a client on sliding scale versus someone who is paying the full fee?

  • How many sliding scale slots can I afford to keep? (take into consideration your personal financial goals & needs)

  • (if there are limited sliding scale slots), how do I determine who will get them?

Until next time
