⚖️ How can you build skills for a new role?

If you’ve been find this newsletter useful, consider sharing it with a friend/colleague by asking them to subscribe here.

This is an ongoing series on career transitions, attempting to draw concrete suggestions from an abstract, nonlinear journey. Part 1: Where to start thinking about the same and Part 2: If not therapy, then what?

If you’re interested in an online meet to chat more about this, drop me a line.

Career transitions are like landing in an unknown country without Google & Maps. You don’t know which direction to head to and where to begin making sense of things. So how do you move past all the unknowns?

If you haven’t already, start with building a deep understanding of what the role entails and the skills required for it. Here are some things I have found helpful:

  • Job Descriptions on LinkedIn: Try and read at least 20 of these from different companies. The process will give you a lot of knowledge about what skills you will need to develop and also how the role varies across industries.

  • Talk to ChatGPT: You can ask ChatGPT to help you understand the technical words in the JDs better and even create a learning plan.

  • Learning Resources: We are in the age of information and every field will have a couple of renowned books, newsletters or podcasts that everyone swears by. A Google search or a LinkedIn reach out to someone from the field are usually sufficient for identifying these. If you’re already done with the basics, give people that context and ask for more recommendations .

  • Join Communities: Most fields have a community today where you can interact with others from that industry or simply gain more understanding by listening to the conversations there.

  • Attend Events: These can be fantastic places to network with people in these roles and learn at the same time.

Have a question about the process? Let me know. I’ll try and answer to the best of my ability.

Until next week,
