⚖️When to raise your session fee

This is a two part series on when and how to raise you session fee. Today, I talk about the when and next week will cover some models for the how.

I have previously discussed the consequences of not raising your session fees. Let’s say, you’ve decided to raise your session fee. When is the best time to do it?

  1. Start of the Calendar Year (January):
Many therapists choose January, aligning the change with the fresh start of a new year. This timing feels natural and can fit well with clients’ mindset shifts and goal setting.

  2. Start of the Financial Year (April):
April is another popular choice, as it marks the beginning of the financial year. For many clients, this coincides with salary appraisals or budget planning, making it a practical time to adjust fees.

  3. Arbitrary Points in the Year:
If you’ve been hesitant to raise your fees and are now realizing it is necessary—perhaps after years of maintaining the same rates—it is okay to make the change even if it is not January or April. When you’re struggling with the decision, taking action is more important than waiting for the “right” time or a specific occasion.

Regardless of when you decide to raise your fees, clear and timely communication is essential. Give your clients ample notice and ensure transparency about the new rates to maintain trust.

Until next week,
