⚖️Models for raising session fee

This is the second part of a two part series on raising your session fee. Read Part 1 on when to raise the session fee here.
Here are some models for fee increases that I’ve observed therapists implementing in their practice. These models can be fixed or flexible:
Raise fee by 10% every year.
This model’s sustainability depends on your starting fee, so it is essential to calculate its long-term impact. Below is an illustration of how a 10% increase would apply to fees of ₹1000 and ₹2000. You can of course pick a different percentage and round off the numbers.
Year 1 | ₹1000 | ₹2000 |
---|---|---|
Year 2 | ₹1100 | ₹2200 |
Year 3 | ₹1210 | ₹2420 |
Year 4 | ₹1331 | ₹2662 |
Year 5 | ₹1464 | ₹2928 |
Raise fee by ₹500 once in 2 years or by ₹300 every year.
This is an example of a fixed model. To make an informed choice, calculate how this model would play out over the next few years.
Decide an amount on a year by year basis.
It can vary from ₹100-500 or more. You can take factors into consideration to decide the same such as inflation that year, increased experience and subsequently expertise, or completion of courses that enhance your skills.
Your fee structure doesn’t need to be set in stone. You might start with a particular model right now but later feel that you need to pick a different one. Like any other business, Private Practice has many moving parts, and it is common to refine these details over time.
Whichever model you choose or whenever you make changes to that choice, I will once again stress that do communicate fee adjustments clearly and well in advance to your clients.
Until next week,
